Stevie Nicks, the legendary Fleetwood Mac singer, has announced she is working on her first new album in 14 years, revealing an unexpectedly personal side in her songwriting journey. In a heartfelt speech at the Pollstar Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where music mogul Jimmy Iovine honored her, Nicks declared she is « actually making a record right now, » an effort she has whimsically titled the « Ghost » record.
A New Chapter: The ‘Ghost’ Record
Describing the album as « real stories, memories of mine, of fantastic men, » Nicks emphasizes the autobiographical nature of her new music. This album marks a departure from her typical style, as she claims she’s « not pulling any punches for probably the first time in my life. » The tracks, characterized by their straightforwardness, share vivid recollections and deep impressions left by individuals who have profoundly impacted her life.
One notable story she shared involved Prince, recalling a memorable encounter after the premiere of Purple Rain. Overcome with emotion during the film, Nicks retreated to the « fancy bathroom » for the remainder of the viewing. She humorously recounted presenting Prince with a 24-carat gold necklace, only for him to retort, « You always bring me a gift. You never bring me you. »
Musical Inspirations and Reflections
Nicks’s reflections on past relationships significantly influence this new collection of songs. In addition to her story about Prince, she mentioned music executive Jimmy Iovine as another source of inspiration. The two shared a romantic involvement from 1980 to 1981, and it seems their shared history could find its way into her music as well.
The creative push for this album also comes from a deeply emotional experience: being evacuated from her Los Angeles home during recent wildfires, a scenario that left an indelible mark on her psyche and further fueled her songwriting.
Upcoming Tour and Performances
In addition to her new album, Stevie Nicks is gearing up for a highly anticipated 2025 North American tour, set to begin in August in Boston. Her tour continues through prime stops like Toronto, Saint Paul, and Cincinnati before concluding this leg in Tampa, Florida. Later, in October, she will resume her tour in Phoenix, head to Las Vegas and Oklahoma City, and play a few joint shows with Billy Joel.
Stevie previously released a powerful single, « The Lighthouse, » inspired by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. Her moving performance of the song on Saturday Night Live marked her return to the show after 41 years, showcasing her enduring presence and vitality within the music industry.
The Legacy Continues
In related news, Fleetwood Mac announced a “fully authorised” documentary by Frank Marshall for Apple Original Films and Apple TV+, marking yet another chapter in the band’s rich legacy. As fans eagerly await both her new album and upcoming concert tour, Stevie Nicks continues to solidify her status as a timeless force in music, unyieldingly resonating with audiences old and new.
